Anxiety over the pandemic, seemingly unending house chores, working in isolation … if you are feeling the pressure of a changing world, know you are not alone.
Whenever you feel overwhelmed or jittery, calm your mind with these simple techniques.
1. Close Those Umpteen Tabs In Your Mind
As TV host/comedian Hasan Minhaj says, you need to choose which tabs to keep open on your mental browser.
When you feel overwhelmed, don’t try to multi-task – that’ll only cause you to panic. Instead, make a physical list of your to-dos in order of priority. Then, focus on one at a time, shutting everything else out for the moment.
2. Label Your Thoughts
Focus on the kind of thought you are having rather than the content of it by labeling them – “this is making me angry”, “this is worrying me,” etc.
Thought labeling helps disengage your mind from a whirlwind of emotions, puts things in better perspective, and enables you to regain your equilibrium.
3. Get Up And Move
Try some quick jumps and skips, dance moves, or a few stretches in quick succession. Give your mind something else to focus on, even shocking it a bit!
The physical effort will also help produce endorphins (happy hormones) in the body.
4. Take A Very Deep Breath
Deep breathing is the fastest way to slow down a racing mind. Inhale through your nose for a count of four and exhale for a count of five through your mouth. Repeat until you feel calmer.
